Qype: Day’s Oriental Buffet in Brighton

Day’s a bizarre place. Walking into this enormous oriental buffet restaurant from the understated and very cool surrounding Lanes is a strange sensation. I can’t think of a place that would belong less in this area of Brighton… but all the same I rather like it.

The first thing to hit you before you walk in (even before the sheer size of the place, which used to be a cinema) is the gaudiness – fake gold gilt mirrors and a fountain covered in fake foliage (albeit with real goldfish in it). Wonderfully tacky, but far more suited to somewhere like Las Vegas than a coastal city in England. The staff (of which there appear to be hundreds) are black and white uniformed, miked up and constantly running around. The service is incredibly fast (they tried to take our drinks order before we’d even sat down), but rather than being pleasing, it just serves to make you feel like you’re being rushed out before you’ve even eaten. This was compounded by the fact that we were told our table was needed within the next half an hour when we were only halfway through eating.

On the plus side, you can’t argue with the value for money here. Far from being just another bland, greasy oriental buffet where all the dishes seem to be varying shades of brown, here you have the choice of chef’s specials, freshly cooked dim sum to order, an indoor barbecue (also cooked to order), starters and appetizers, curries, stir fries, crispy duck pancakes, unlimited sushi (which is AMAZING value) and, finally, the HUGEST array of desserts you’ve ever seen. There are chocolate fountains, cakes, ice cream, jellies, fruit cocktails… every dessert you could imagine in every colour you can think of.

All in all, Day’s is great value for money (ranging from £6.50 to £13.99 all you can eat depending on time of day and day of the week). But you have to remember that it is a fast-food place, so while you can expect to stuff your face with great food to the tune of Boyzone’s greatest hits being interrupted every 30 seconds by “Happy Birthday”, I wouldn’t even dream of taking a date there.‎
