Qype: R-bar in Brighton

Whenever I head in the Kemp Town direction on a night out with my LGBT friends, it’s rare that we don’t stop at R-Bar as a first point of call. This place is a hugely popular seafront gay bar with a nice interior and friendly staff and clientele. Although I’m sure it used to be incredibly swish and modern, it may be a little bit passed its best now. Don’t get me wrong though – it’s still great.

Probably the best things about R-Bar are their drinks deals, especially the coin toss on a Friday night. Essentially, when you order a round you have the option to flip a coin – if you guess heads or tails correctly, then they double your round. I had a fantastically lucky night in here last summer with three friends where every time one of us went to the bar we came back with eight Coronas. Result!

The other great thing about this place is that their pool table is free. Yup, free. Although I spent a good few months thinking it was broken and we were just getting away with it. They also have a relaxed gallery area with sofas which overlooks the sea and an area where you can hire a Nintendo Wii console for hourly slots. The Wii time is free, but you have to put down a hefty deposit to secure against breakages.

Although R-Bar definitely isn’t the classiest of places, I know that I’m always guaranteed to have a fun night here. It attracts some real characters and everyone is (usually) chatty, loud and friendly. If you like your drinks cheap, your pool games free and your company on the fun side of crazy then this is a great place.
